Smith Softball Drops Two to Springfield

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers dropped two to NEWMAC opponent Springfield College, 10-0 in 5 innings and 8-5. With the losses Smith drops to 6-14 on year and 2-6 in the conference.

Springfield pitcher Samantha Rhodes held the Pioneers hitless in the first game of the double header. The only base runner for Smith was Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY) who reached base on an error. Dee Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) took the loss for Smith giving up 2 earned runs over the course of 4 innings. The Pioneers were plagued by 5 errors which led to the addition 8 runs scored.

In the second game, the Pioneers jumped out to a 3 run lead in the top of the first inning. The Pride of Springfield answered with 2 runs in their half of the inning. The teams stayed close throughout the game, with Springfield taking the lead in bottom of the third 4-3. The Pioneers battled in the seventh inning, scoring 1 and bringing the tieing run to the plate with two outs but were unable to do any further damage against Pride reliever Rhodes.

In the second game, the Pioneers were led offensively by Fryer who went 2-4, Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) who went 3-4 with an RBI, Taryn Pestalozzi (Troutdale, OR) who went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, and Kate Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD) who went 3-3 with 2 RBIs. Fisher took the loss in the circle, giving up 8 earned runs over 6 innings of work.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they host Williams College in a double header begining at 4 pm.
