Softball Drops Doubleheader at Wheaton
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers dropped a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader 3-2, 20-2 at Wheaton College this afternoon. With the losses, Smith fell to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the NEWMAC while the Lyons improved to 21-7 overall and 7-3 in conference competition.
Smith took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the first game on a home run by sophomore Marisa Kritikson (Tampa, FL) but the Lyons answered with two runs in the fourth.
The Pioneers tied the game at two in the sixth on a double by Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY) who scored on a single by shortstop Katie Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD) but Wheaton took the 3-2 win in the bottom of the seventh on two errors and a wild pitch. Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) went the distance on the mound for Smith and gave up 4 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.
In the second game, Wheaton's bats couldn't be stopped as the Lyons got 18 hits and cruised to a 20-2 win. The home team put 17 runs up in the opening three innings. Taryn Pestalozzi (Troutdale, OR) homered for Smith in the third inning and the Pioneers scored an unearned run in the fourth. Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) took the loss for Smith giving up 11 hits in 2.2 innings.
The Pioneers will travel to Springfield College tomorrow for another NEWMAC doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
