Softball Falls 6-1 to Western New England
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers traveled to non-conference opponent Western New England College yesterday afternoon and fell to the Golden Bears 6-1. With the loss, Smith dropped to 6-8 overall while WNEC improved to 9-6.
Both teams remained scoreless until the fourth inning where WNEC scored all of its runs. With two runners on base, Christinea Farese (Marlborough, MA) hit a home run to collect three RBI's. The Golden Bears scored three more runs, all unearned, to take a 6-0 lead and held on to that lead until the top of the seventh.
The Pioneers' Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) singled and advanced to second as Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) drew a walk. Senior catcher Taryn Pestalozzi (Troutdale, OR) reached on an error and Paull scored Smith's only run on a sacrifice fly by Laura Robitzek (Auburn, ME). Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) took the loss for Smith as she gave up 9 hits and 6 runs in 3.2 innings.
The Pioneers are in action again on Friday when they travel to NEWMAC rival Springfield College for a 3:30 pm doubleheader.
