Softball Falls to Trinity 7-5

Northampton, MA: Although Megan Kiefer (Oak Park, IL) homered twice and drove in three runs for Smith, the Pioneers fell 7-5 to Trinity in their New England opener. With the loss, Smith fell to 4-7 while Trinity improved to 4-4.

The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Schoenen singled, stole second, advanced to third on a hit by Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) and then scored on a passed ball. The Bantams answered with three runs in the first and two more in the second to take a 5-1 lead before Smith tallied two in the third. Sophomore Marisa Kritikson (Tampa, FL) led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an error and then scored on Kiefer's first homerun of the game to bring Smith within two runs.  Trinity added a run in each of the 4th and 5th innings to take a 7-4 lead. Kiefer homered again in the 7th and picked up her third RBI of the game as the Pioneers fell 7-5. Schoenen went 2-4 with an RBI while Dezarai Fisher (Phoeniz, AZ) and Kritikson each were 1-3.

Fisher took the loss on the mound for Smith as she gave up 6 hits and 5 runs in two innings while Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) pitched four innings of relief and gave up four hits and two runs.

Smith opens New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition on Sunday when the host MIT in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
