Smith Softball Splits First Two Games at Rebel Games

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers opened their season in Kissimmee, Florida as part of the Rebel Games on Sunday. Smith won its opening game against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts by a score of 9-3. The Pioneers then dropped their second game to #14 ranked Rowan University by a score of 11-3 in 6 innings. In the first game, Emily Hiltzik picked up the win for Smith throwing 4 solid innings. Dee Fisher then entered the game in relief to pitch 3 scoreless innings for the save. Offensively, the Pioneers had a well balanced attack with 8 of the starters collecting at least one hit. Captains Kate Schoenen and Crystal Fryer led the way with 2 hits and an RBI a piece. In the second game, the Pioneers had a strong offensive showing collecting 7 hits, while scoring 3 runs against a tough pitcher in the form of Rowan's Amanda Riegel. In the circle, Fisher picked up the loss despite throwing well for six innings against a top 15 opponent. Smith returns to action Monday as they face Rutgers-Camden and Bridgewater State at 1 pm and 5 pm respectively.
