Soccer Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Quarterfinals

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers, seeded fifth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Soccer Championship, fell to fourth seed MIT 2-0 this afternoon on a rain-soaked field at Steinbrenner Stadium in Cambridge. With the loss, Smith ends the 2007 season with an overall record of 5-10-1 while the Engineers (12-5) advance to the semifinals of the championship.

MIT scored both of its goals in the first five minutes of the opening half with assists on both goals going to Amy Ludlum (Misson Viejo, CA). In the third minute of play senior Janine Hopmans (Davis, CA) sent a ground shot past Smith keeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) to score what would be the game winning goal. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Liz Theurer (Gainesville, FL) split two Pioneer defenders and tallied her 11th goal of the season.

The Pioneers, who outshot the home team 10-6, had several scoring opportunities including a shot by Krista Matatt (Hoosick Falls, NY) in the 70th minute, however, MIT's Mary Harding (Wilton, CT) made the save.  Harding ended the afternoon with 8 saves while Bachtel stopped two shots.
