Wellesley Defeats Smith Soccer in OT
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell 2-1 in overtime to Wellesley yesterday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition to end the regular season in fifth place in the conference standings.
Following a scoreless first half in which the Blue held a 9-3 shot advantage, Wellesley's Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) scored on a shot from the 30-yard line that sailed over the head of Smith keeper Elizabeth Isenstein (Deerfield, MA ). Smith answered with strong pressure and with under eight minutes left in regulation, Nicole Widger (Clarksville, MD) found Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) who scored her fourth goal of the season on a shot that found the right-hand corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The Blue had scoring opportunities in the remaining minutes but Isenstein made two saves to send the game into overtime. Neither team could convert the game winner in the first overtime period but 1.5 minutes into the second OT, Jennie Krasker (Newton, MA) tallied the game winner for Wellesley off a corner kick.
Eisenstein made six saves for the Pioneers who fell to 5-9-1 overall and 4-5 in the conference while Wellesley improved to 7-7-2 and 3-5-1. Smith will travel to MIT for an 11:00 am NEWMAC Championship quarterfinal contest on Saturday, October 27th.
