Smith Soccer Defeats Mount Holyoke 3-2
Northampton, MA: Sophomore Valerie Driscoll (Keene, NH) scored the game equalizer and Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, UT) tallied two goals to give the Pioneers a come-from-behind 3-2 defeat of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and valley rival Mount Holyoke College. With the win, Smith improved to 4-6-1 overall and 3-2 in conference play while the Lyons fell to 2-10-0 overall and 0-5 in the NEWMAC.
The Lyons took a 1-0 lead into the half on a goal by sophomore Lauren Orr (Fullerton, CA) with an assist from Colleen Richards (Forest HIlls, NY). Although the Pioneers outshot the Lyons 12-4 in the first half, none of the shots found the net.
The Pioneers offense came alive in the second half as Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) set up Driscoll and then Bird within the first six minutes of play to give Smith a 2-1 edge. Bird registered what proved to be the game-winner at the 81:17 mark unassisted as she drilled the ball into the left corner of the net. Mount Holyoke responded with another goal by Orr with just 20 seconds left to bring the Lyons within one. Junior Marlowe Dieckmann (Oakland, CA) and first year Elizabeth Isenstein (Deerfield, MA) each played a half in goal for Smith and Isenstein picked up her first victory of the season. Sophomore Elaine Harvey (Bolton, MA) made 17 saves in the loss for the Lyons.
The Pioneers and the Lyons will be in action again on Saturday at 1 pm when Smith hosts NEWMAC rival Springfield College and Mount Holyoke travels to Wellesley.
