Soccer Defeats WPI, 2-1
Northampton, MA: Sophomores Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) and Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, GA) tallied second half goals to give the Pioneers a 2-1 win at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival WPI this afternoon. With the win, Smith improved to 3-6-1 overall and 2-2 in conference action while WPI fell to 6-6 on the season and 2-2 in NEWMAC competition.
WPI scored the first goal of the game in the 31st minute when Jocelyn Moody (Bainbridge Island, WA) received a pass from Meg Pasquali (Laconia, NH) and scored from 25 yards out that gave the Engineers a 1-0 lead at the half.
Smith tied the game in the 66th minute when Grover-Silva headed in her third goal of the year off a corner kick by Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, UT). The Pioneers scored the game winner with six minutes remaining when Houser stole the ball at midfield and passed it to Valerie Driscoll (Keene, NH). Driscoll gave the ball right back to Houser who tallied her sixth goal of the season. Marlowe Dieckmann (Oakland, CA) stopped two shots in goal for Smith while Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) made fives saves in the loss for WPI.
Smith returns to action on Tuesday when they host valley and NEWMAC rival Mount Holyoke College at 4 pm.
