Soccer Defeats Coast Guard 5-1
Northampton, MA: Sophomores Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) and Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, GA) each tallied two goals in the Pioneers 5-1 defeat of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Coast Guard last night in New London. The victory improved Smith's overall record to 2-6-1 and NEWMAC record to 1-2 while Coast Guard fell to 1-9 and 0-3.
Grover-Silva put the Pioneers on the board in the 20th minute as she headed the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick by classmate Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, UT) and scored again five minutes later off a corner by tri-captain Caitlin Colman-McGaw (Manchester, CT) to give Smith a 2-1 lead at the half. Smith sealed the victory in the second half scoring three goals within three minutes of each other by Bird and Houser (2).
Junior Jen Ferreira scored the lone goal for the Bears who were outshot 23-7 by the Pioneers. Smith keeper Marlowe Dieckmann (Oakland, CA) stopped four shots while Tricia Ohle made seven saves in the loss for Coast Guard.
The Pioneers will travel to WPI on Saturday for a noon NEWMAC contest before returning home to host Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday at 4 pm.
