Smith Soccer Defeats Wesleyan 2-1 in Overtime
Northampton, MA: After falling 1-0 to Wesleyan at half time, the Pioneers were able to force the match into overtime and earn their first win on the season in dramatic fashion. With the victory Smith improves their overall record to 1-3-1, while the Cardinals fall to 1-3-0 on the season.
Wesleyan was able to strike first at the 28:55 mark as Dasha Battelle '11 (Brookline, MA) finished a rebound off a free kick. Hailey Bird '10 (Salt Lake City, UT), on the other hand, opted to directly capitalize on a free kick at 70:18 as she beat Wesleyan keeper Andrea Giuliano '09 (Weathersfield, CT) from about twenty yards out. Despite great efforts by the Pioneers to score the game winner in regulation they did not find the back of the net until 97:19 as Valerie Driscoll '10 (Keene, NH) played a through ball to Dalyn Houser '10 (Atlanta, GA) who was able to catch the Wesleyan keeper off her line to secure the victory for Smith.
Marlowe Dieckmann '09 (Oakland, CA) posted 4 saves on the match for the Pioneers. Gavi Elkind '09 (San Francisco, CA) of Wesleyan stopped 4 shots, while Guiliano tallied 2 saves for the Cardinals.
Smith will open conference play on Saturday, September 22 as they host Wheaton College at 2:30 pm.
