Lacrosse Falls to Wellesley in Quarterfinals of NEWMAC Championship

Northampton, MA: Senior Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY) and first year Caitlin Kennedy (South Hadley, MA) each scored three goals for the Pioneers in Smith's 13-7 loss to Wellesley in the quarterfinals of the 2008 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Lacrosse Championship. The Pioneers end the season 5-10 overall while Wellesley advances in the tournament.

Wellesley jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the opening fourteen minutes of play behind the scoring of Briana Roberge (Bow, NH), Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) and Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, VA). The Pioneers attack responded with four consecutive goals to tie the game, two from Smyth and one each from Kennedy and Carolyn Whiting (South Orange, NJ).  With just under six minutes left in the half, Whitaker tallied twice more for Wellesley to give the Blue a 6-4 advantage at the break.

Kennedy and Smyth opened the second half with back-to-back goals to tie the game at 6-6 but Wellesley's Whitaker and Roberge combined for the next seven goals to break the game open for the Blue. Kennedy scored the last goal for Smith with three minutes remaining.  Keeper Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) made 12 saves in the loss for Smith while Kristen Jaroncyzk (Manhasset, NY) stopped 13 shots in Wellesley's win.
