Wheaton Lacrosse Defeats Smith 11-9

Northampton, MA: In a come-from-behind victory this afternoon in Northampton, the Lyons of Wheaton College defeated Smith 11-9 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. With the loss, the Pioneers fell to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in conference competition while Wheaton improved to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC.

Sara Smyth ( Brooklyn, NY), Carolyn Whiting (South Orange, NJ) and Caitlyn Kennedy (South Hadley, MA) each scored for the Pioneers to put the home team ahead 3-0 in the opening six minutes of play.  Wheaton's Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME), who led the Lyons with a team high four goals, scored the Lyon's first goal midway through the first half to bring Wheaton within two (3-1). Dimick and Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME) each tallied a goal while Kennedy scored twice more in the remaining fifteen minutes to give the Pioneers a 5-3 advantage at the break.

Dimick opened the second period with a quick goal less than one minute into play to bring Wheaton within one and a shot two minutes later by Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA) evened the score at 5.  Smith regained the lead on goals by Lindsey Aldrich (Vero Beach, CA) and Emily Riff (Wayzata, MN) but the Lyons ran off the next four goals to take their first lead of the game at 9-7.  Smyth scored for the Pioneers with an assist from Riff and senior Lesley Aldrich (Vero Beach, FL) tied the game at the 6 minute mark but Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD) converted what proved to be the game winner with just under five minutes left and Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD) added the insurance goal for the visitors with four minutes left in regulation.

Senior Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) gave up 11 goals and made 22 saves in the loss for the Pioneers while Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME) made 10 stops in the victory.
