Lacrosse Defeats Mt. Holyoke 11-8

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers scored the first four goals of the game in what would prove to be an 11-8 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference foe, Mount Holyoke. With the win, Smith improves to 4-6(1-3 NEWMAC) on the season, while Mount Holyoke falls to 2-9 (0-4 NEWMAC).

Less than four minutes into the game first-year, Caitlyn Kennedy (S. Hadley, MA), put Smith up 1-0 off an assist from Emily Riff '08 (Wayzata, MN). Smith senior, Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY), led the Pioneers in scoring with four goals on the game. Less than a minute separated Smyth's first two as she scored Smith's second and third goals with 25:33 and 24:43 to go in the first half. Danielle Schmandt '09 (Austin, TX) put in the fourth goal for the Pioneers at 23:47 before Peggy Wefald '10 (Granger, IN) scored Mt. Holyoke's first, and only goal of the half, at 21:38. Smyth scored her third goal for Smith off a free position opportunity at 20:32. From that point, both teams remained scoreless until Michelle Walsh '10 (Northampton, MA) put Smith up 8-1 off an assist by Carolyn Whiting '10 (S. Orange, NJ) at 3:34 to end the half.

Walsh opened the second half where she ended the first; with a goal at 23:29 assisted by Schmandt. Kennedy followed with an unassisted goal at 23:04 before Mt. Holyoke would go on a 4-0 run making the game 8-5 with 15:35 remaining. Blair Rapalyea '09 (Prides Crossing, MA) scored two unassisted goals in a row for Smith (14:57 and 12:37) to end Mt. Holyoke's run. Smyth scored Smith's final goal of the game at 8:15.  

The Pioneers will be back in action Thursday, April 17 as they travel to Keene State for 4:30 pm game.
