Smith Lacrosse Falls 11-4 to Wellesley
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell 11-4 to Wellesley this afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)contest. With the loss, Smith fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play while the Blue of Wellesley improved to 6-3 and 2-0 in the NEWMAC.
Although junior Blair Rapalyea (Prides Crossing, MA) put Smith on the board just one minute into the game, the Blue of Wellesley outscored the Pioneers 8-1 over the remainder of the half to take a 8-2 lead into the break. Senior Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY) tallied the second goal for Smith while sophomore Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, VA) led the Blue as she scored four of her game high five goals.
The Pioneers' defense intensified in the second half led by goalkeeper Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) who made 14 saves and allowed just three additional goals but Smith's offense continued to struggle. First year Caitlin Kennedy (South Hadley, MA) scored at the 20 minute mark for Smith, but Wellesley's Amber Evans (Worthington, OH), Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) and Whitaker responded with three consecutive goals before Smyth tallied her second goal of the game with 7 minutes remaining.
Wellesley keeper Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY) picked up the win as she made four saves and allowed just four goals while Smith took the loss for the Pioneers.
