Wellesley Defeats Field Hockey in Quarterfinals of NEWMAC Championship
Northampton, MA: Smith fell to Wellesley College 5-0 this afternoon in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)Field Hockey Championship. The Pioneers end the season 3-13 while the Blue (12-5) advance to the semifinals.
Wellesley's attack came out strong in the opening minutes of play taking six shots while being awarded four penalty corners, but the defensive play of Smith keeper Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) kept the Pioneers in the game as she held the Blue scoreless. The Blue, who outshot Smith 32-12, maintained the pressure and succeeded in scoring in the 15th minute as Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI) took a pass a from Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) and scored the game winner. Wellesley tallied its second goal of the half just seven minutes later on a shot by Catherine Marchetta (Princeton, NJ) with an assist from Scudder.
Kathryn Frett (Hallowell, ME) scored the next two goals for Wellesley in the second half and Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) the fifth in the Blue's victory. Smith had several scoring opportunities in the second half, but Wellesley keeper Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) denied the Pioneers a goal. Winter had an impressive 20 saves in the season finale for Smith.
