Field Hockey Falls at Babson

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Babson College 7-2 today at Babson. With the loss, Smith fell to 3-11 overall and 2-5 in the conference while the Beavers (12-6, 7-0) moved into first place in the NEWMAC standings.

Babson took a 5-0 lead into the half behind the scoring of Brittany Stevens (Dudley, MA) who registered a hat-trick including the game winning goal at the 17th minute mark.  Midfielders Mikayla Shea (Dover, NH) and Annie Pease (Waterville, ME) tallied the other two first half goals for Babson.

The Beavers built their lead to 7-0 in the first 20 minutes of the second half on goals by Jess Paladino (Turner, ME) and Pease before the Pioneers got on the board on a goal by Mary Kate Long (Boylston, MA) off a penalty corner from Katilyn Murdough (Hinsdale, NH) and Talia Williams (Montpelier, VT). Sophomore Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) scored unassisted for Smith with less than three minutes left in the game.  Goalkeeper Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) went the distance for Smith and finished with 16 saves.

The Pioneers will play in their last regular season contest on Tuesday night when they travel to Clark University for a 7 pm game.
