Smith Field Hockey Falls to Mount Holyoke 3-2

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell 3-2 tonight to the Lyons of Mount Holyoke in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)field hockey contest held under the lights at Smith College. With the win, the Lyons improved to 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in NEWMAC play while Smith fell to 2-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Sophomore Katelyn Frick (Lafayette, NJ) put the Lyons on the board first with an assist from Anne Doton (Woodstock, VT) with 16:02 left in the first half to give the Lyons a 1-0 lead at halftime.  Junior Jaimie Macari (Fiskdale, MA) put the Lyons up by two four minutes into the second half before sophomore Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) closed the gap to one for the Pioneers seven minutes later. The Pioneers had an opportunity to tie the game on a penalty stroke but Lyons' keeper Allie Walsh (Ann Arbor, MI) made the save. Senior tri-captain Meaghan Murphy (Glenmont, NY) scored the game winner for Mount Holyoke in the eighteenth minute of play with an assist from Macari.  Capute tallied her second goal of the game unassisted with 12:38 remaining.  Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) made 9 saves in the loss for Smith while Walsh picked up her fifth win of the season.

Smith will be in action again on Thursday night when they host Western New England College at 6 p.m.
