Field Hockey Falls to Wellesley

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell 5-0 to Wellesley this afternoon in Wellesley. With the loss, Smith dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) while the Blue improved to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the NEWMAC.

Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) and Kathryn Frett (Hallowell, ME) scored two first half goals to give Wellesley a 2-0 lead at the half.  Lekas tallied two more in the second half and Catherine Marchetta (Princeton, NJ) made it five for the home team.    Wellesley outshot the Pioneers 34-10 en route to its victory.

First year Courtney Murphy (Florence, MA) made nine saves in goal for Smith in the loss while Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) stopped three for Wellesley.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host valley and NEWMAC rival Mount Holyoke College at 7 pm.
