Field Hockey Falls 5-1 at Springfield

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell to nationally ranked Springfield College last night 5-1 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)contest held at the Pride's Stagg Field. With the win, Springfield improved to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference while Smith fell to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in NEWMAC competition.

Springfield, currently ranked 14th in the country in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll, was led by junior Jane Kelleher (Chatham, MA) who tallied two goals in the first half (28:00 & 17:33) and one in the second (5:15). Senior Eileen Jenkins (Gorham, ME) scored the first goal of the game for the Pride just twenty seconds into the game and Allie Baier (Farmington, CT) gave Springfield a 4-0 lead at the half on a goal with 6:59 left.

The Pioneers, who were outshot 15-2, tallied their lone goal on a shot by first year Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) with 7:04 remaining in the game. Smith keeper Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) made 10 saves in the loss.

The Pioneers travel to Wellesley College on Sunday for a 1 pm NEWMAC contest.
