Smith Field Hockey Defeats NEWMAC Rival MIT 3-0
Northampton, MA: Sophomore Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) scored two early first half goals to give the Pioneers their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)win of the 2007 season. With the win, Smith improved to 2-4 overall while the Engineers dropped to 3-5.
Capute tallied her first goal thirty seconds into the game with an assist from sophomore Anika Goodhue (Bennington, VT). Her second goal was three minutes later when she converted a shot that rebounded off the MIT's keeper Alexa Herman (Suffern, NY). The Pioneers offense continued to dominate and Smith registered its third goal on a shot by Goodhue with an assist from senior Kim Wronski (Sturbridge, MA) at the 16:54 mark. The Pioneers outshot MIT 21 to four. First year keeper Courtney Murphy (Florence, MA) picked up her second win of the season while Herman took the loss for MIT.
Smith field hockey will be in action again on Monday night when they host Nichols College at 5 p.m.
