Smith Field Hockey Defeats Elms, 3-1
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers of Smith College scored three second half goals en route to their 3-1 defeat of Elms College this evening in Northampton. The victory was the first of the season under new head coach Jaime Ginsberg who picked up her first collegiate win. Smith improved to 1-4 overall while the Blazers fell to 1-6.
The Pioneers dominated the first half outshooting Elms 10-0 but the Blazers' goalkeeper Katelyn Wasgatt (Worcester, MA) made five saves and the defense held to keep the game scoreless at the half. Senior Kim Wronski (Sturbridge, MA) put Smith on the board first less than two minutes into the second half converting a shot from the right of the goal. Sophomore Anika Goodhue (Bennington, VT) tallied the second and what proved to be the game winning goal at the 27:20 mark.
With under ten minutes left in the game, Elms attack took over with first year Denise Perks (Blackstone, MA) taking two shots and finding the goal with 8:41 remaining. Both teams had scoring opportunities in the remaining minutes, but it was Goodhue who scored her second goal of the game for Smith with seven seconds remaining to secure the Pioneer's victory.
Smith will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition on Saturday when they host the Engineers of MIT at noon.
