Amherst Defeats Pioneers in Home Opener 5-1

Northampton, MA: In their home opener, Smith field hockey lost to valley foe Amherst College 5-1. Amherst upped its early season record to 2-0, while the Pioneers fell to 0-2.

After a hard fought first half, the Smith defense was able to hold Amherst to one goal by Alyssa Dudzik ((Darien, CT) scored at the 17:50 mark. Amherst took control of the game in the second half scoring four additional goals. The first came at 31:30 by Sarah Tracy (Sturbridge, MA), followed by a goal by Molly Malloy (Stamford, CT) at the 30:47 mark. Dudzik scored her second goal of the game at 25:39. Amherst's final goal was scored with 15:48 left in the game by Malloy for her second goal of the night.  However, the Pioneers showed persistance and tallied the final goal of the game on a shot by Rebbeca Capute (Easton, MD)12:19.

Goalie Kathleen Boucher (Washington, D.C)  started for the Lady Jeffs making 2 saves. Jane Mostue (Lincoln, MA) finished the night for Amherst with 2 saves and 1 goal against. Courtney Murphy (Florence, MA) made 11 saves for the Pioneers while allowing 5 goals.

Smith is back in action this Friday and Saturday, September 15-16 as they compete in the Seven Sisters Championship taking on Bryn Mawr and Vassar.
