Equestrians Claim 25 Ribbons in Opening Show of the Spring

Northampton, MA: The Smith equestrians brought home 25 ribbons, 17 in the top four places, from the UMass Show today. The eighteen riders finished in fourth place with 22 points, just one point out of third and two points out of second place. Host UMass and Mount Holyoke College tied for High Point College with 41 points while Becker took home Reserve High Point College with 24 points followed by Holy Cross with 23 points.

Christine Stine (East Dover, VT) was the Reserve Champion Rider of the day in the Intermediate Division while Barrett Phillips (Goochland, VA) qualified for Regionals in Novice Over Fences. Stine, intermediate flat; Xiaoshuang Chen (Ningbo, China) in walk, trot; Steffi Gavin (East Haddam, CT) in novice on the flat; Mary Borderwieck (Bernardston, MA) in novice on the flat and Susanna Haas (South Acworth, NH) in beginner walk, trot each brought home a first place ribbon.

A second place ribbon was won by Kathryn Mishkin (Old Chatham, NY) in over fences while Kimberly Meskimen (Medina, MN), Judy del Cuadro-Zimmerman (Brooklyn, NY), Mishkin, and Jill Medinger (Newtown, CT) on the flat and Stine in over fences took third place. Fourth place ribbons were won by Medinger, Kelly Hulyk (Milford, MA), Rosemary Bethea (Trenton, NJ) and Marguerite Davenport (Mill Valley, CA).

The Smith equestrians will compete again on Saturday, March 1 at the Mount Holyoke Show.
