Smith Crews Race at National Invitational Collegiate Regatta

Northampton, MA: The Smith crews raced in the 2008 National Invitational Collegiate Regatta held Saturday and Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester and finished in fifth place in the Women's Point Trophy with 43 points. Ithaca won the points trophy with 63 points, followed by Holy Cross (57), Williams and Trinity with 54.

The novice eight (Caitlin Eisenberg, Amy Shmania, Katharine von Herrmann, Chelsea Andrews, Alissa Ortman, Elaine Machietto, MacKenzie Clark, Rachael Philbrick and Kelsea Thornton) had a great race in their heat and finished second (7:20.013) behind Simmons (7:09.550) that put them in the grand final. In the grand final, the crew placed fifth in 7:53.570, thirteen seconds out of first place. Simmons won the race in 7:38.071 followed by Wellesley (7:42.182), Ithaca (7:47.675) and Holy Cross (7:51.485).

The second varsity eight (Kim Pucher, Rowan van Ness, Dana Lindsay, Anna Frej, Lauren Carpenter, Gabriele Kubik, Emilie Lerner, Emily Hart and Maria Santos) also placed second in their heat (6:56.772) behind Trinity (6:47.289). The team advanced to the grand final and finished fourth (7:39.013) behind Williams (7:28.553), Trinity (7:34.265) and Ithaca (7:35.884).

The Pioneers varsity eight (Missy Wong, Emily Taylor, Caitlin Miller, Chantel pheiffer, Eliza van Lennep, Eliza Bryant, Bri Tomboulian, Margaret Woodman-Russell and Molly Johnson) took third in its heat (6:55.472) behind Ithaca (6:46.983) and UNH (6:49.891) and rowed to 6th in the semifinals in 7:14.00 behind Williams (6:50.900), St. Lawrence, Ithaca, William Smith and Holy Cross. In the petite final, the crew placed fifth (11th overall) in a time of 7:15.007.  Williams won the race in 6:46.822 followed by Trinity, Bates, Ithaca, St. Lawrence, UNH, Coast Guard, Holy Cross, William Smith and Skidmore.

Three crews raced in the alumnae class with Smith overpowering its opponents and taking first in 6:54.506); UNH was second (7:18.499) and WPI third (7:37.719). The Smith alumnae boat was comprised of Vanessa Otto '05, Kristina Latta-Landefeld '06, Anna Crary '04, Leigh Eubank '06, Kim Paull '07, Kim Sonderland '05, Annie Coppock '06, Jeana Lee '07 and Katie Seston '05.
