Smith Crew Finishes Fourth at NEWMAC Championship
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers finished in fourth place in the varsity eight race at the NEWMAC Championship and placed third in the Florence Cup (overall points). The United States Coast Guard Academy claimed its second consecutive NEWMAC championship at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. this morning in a time of 6:52.07.
In the six-boat varsity eight, the Bears edged Mount Holyoke (6:57.77) by just over five seconds with Wellesley third (7:00.36), Smith fourth (7:03.37), WPI fifth (7:15.53) and Clark sixth (7:27.68).
Wellesley won the third varsity eight race in 7:22.7 with Mount Holyoke second (7:31.56) and Smith third (8:01.45).
The Pioneers took first in the second varsity eight in a time of 7:09.5 followed by Mount Holyoke (7:13.83), Wellesley (7:16.58) and Coast Guard (7:29.98).
In the novice race, Wellesley took first in 7:22.2 with Smith second (7:27.01), Mount Holyoke third (7:29.51) and Coast Guard fourth in 7:35.25.
Wellesley captured the Florence Cup with 40 points. Mount Holyoke took second with 38, Smith third (36), Coast Guard fourth (24), WPI fifth (4) and Clark sixth with 2 points.
Named to the NEWMAC All -Conferenced women's rowing varsity team from Smith were Rowan Van Ness (Mukilteo, WA) and Briana Tomboulian (East Lansing, MI) while Amy Shmania (Chapel Hill, NC) was named to the All NEWMAC novice team.
