Smith Basketball Defeats Gordon
Northampton, MA: Sophomore Berit Schelde (Holstebro, Denmark) led the Pioneers with 17 points enroute to Smith's 61-51 defeat of Gordon College this evening in Northampton. With the win, Smith improved to 2-4 on the season while the Fighting Scots fell to 1-3.
Gordon took an early 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of play behind two three-pointers by Kimberly Levinsky (West Caldwell, NJ) and a deuce from Sara Schwanke (Duxbury, MA) but the Pioneers slowly chipped away at the lead to tie it at 10 with ten minutes remaining. With the game tied at 19 and 1:46 remaining, the Pioneers outscored the Fighting Scots six to three to take a 25-22 advantage into halftime.
Gordon built a four-point lead in the second half in the first five minutes but shots by Schelde and Meredith Murelli (Litchfield, CT) tied it at 35. Erin Thames (River Vale, NJ) gave Gordon a two point lead by Smith's Ashley Sutton (Greenfield, MA) answered with a three pointer followed with two free throws to put Smith up 40-37. The Pioneers outscored Gordon 12-6 in the final five minutes to take the victory.
Sophomore Rebecca Carroll (Pleasant Valley, NY) had a team high 12 points with 8 rebounds for Gordon while Courtney Parker (Ocean City, MD) had a team high 8 rebounds for Smith.
The Pioneers travel to Middlebury College on Saturday, December 8 for a 1 p.m. contest.
