Smith Completes New Outdoor Riding Ring

Northampton, MA: The generosity of Smith alumnae, spearheaded by Judy Richter, Class of '61, has provided the equestrian center with a new outdoor riding ring.

A prominent, active member of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) who over the years judged clinics and horse shows at Smith, Richter approached Smith's equestrian coach and director, Sue Payne, about securing funds for a new outdoor ring.  Richter's donation, along with that of a parent and a handful of alumnae, made it possible to begin planning.

The initial planning was to upgrade the ring in front of the barn but after meeting with contractors and surveying the property, it was determined that there wasn't enough space to accomodate a 100' x 200' ring.  The paddock area behind the barn was then chosen as the site and the removal of the old paddock fencing, trees and debris began in September. The area was graded and a new irrigation system was added.  Six inches of stone dust for the base and two and one-half inches of sand comprise the footing for the ring.  New vinyl fencing and gates for the ring and paddocks completed the project that is now being enjoyed by the entire Smith equestrian community. "The new ring is now a size that will allow us to set a full (jump) course and have horse shows outside.  It completes the upgrading of our facilities, which has happened over a twenty-one year period, due to the incredible generosity of our equestrienne alumnae and their families," stated Payne.  "It has been so exciting to see this ring completed and to be able to ride out there the past couple of weeks!  We are all looking forward to holding our spring intercollegiate horse show there."
