Smith Track & Field Represented at 2006 New England
Division III
Outdoor Championships

Springfield, MA: NEWMAC member Springfield College played host to the 2006 Division III New England Championships this weekend where Smith brought a field of 6 qualifiers to compete against the regions top tracksters. After two days of competition, Smith placed 15th in a field of 28, fourth among the NEWMAC schools.

On Friday, senior Katie Walters-Krohn (Minneapolis, MN) and first year Clarie Edwards (Klamath Falls, OR), the lone competitors for Smith, came up a bit short in their pursuit for team points in their respective events but Walters-Krohn broke into the top 10 with her 9th place finish in the Hammer Throw. Her distance of 43.41m was the third best score among other NEWMAC throwers while Edwards’ jump of 4.63m placed her 23rd out of 28 qualifying long jumpers.

Junior McKane Sharff (Arlington, MA) opened competition for the Pioneers on Saturday placing 4th in 12.75s in the 100m Dash , collecting the first points for Smith in the competition. In the 4 X 100m Relay, Sharff was joined by Caitlin Ritchie (Meriden, CT), Ebonie Tillmon (Chicha, IL) and Edwards as they raced to a 11th place time of 51.66s. Sharff continued the pace for Smith, placing 3rd in the 200m as the fastest NEWMAC sprinter, collecting 6 more points for her team.

Walters-Krohn, the teams lone thrower, captured 8th in the Discus throwing for 36.60m, topping three conference opponents in the process, and 9th in the Shot Put with her distance of 11.46m. Senior Sue Jensen (Saxtons River, VT) narrowly missed points in the Pole Vault with her vault of 2.90m, good enough for 10th place.

NEWMAC rival schools Springfield, MIT and WPI finished the competition in 3rd, 8th, and 14th respectively as Smith collected just 12 points over the two days for their 15th place finish.

With Open New Englands slated for next weekend, May 12th and 13th at MIT, the Pioneers will field their distance runners in addition to the qualifying sprinters and Katie Walters-Krohn in the throwing events.
