Smith Tennis Defeats Springfield

Springfield, MA: In today’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match-up with Springfield College, the Pioneers upset the Pride 8-1, winning all five singles matches. With the victory, Smith is now 4-16 on the year and 2-7 in the NEWMAC.

Playing in the number one singles slot, senior Cami Whitney (S. Pasadena, CA) defeated Meghan Kelly with scores of 6-1 and 6-4. Junior Kate Johnson (Auburn, KS) followed Whitney’s lead, taking two matches from Melissa Weinstein with scores of 6-4 and 6-1. Sophomore Talia Williams (Montpeiler, VT) kept things rolling for the Pioneers, downing Shannon Desroches 6-3 and 6-3. Sophomore Seiko Fujii (Aichi, JAPAN) followed in fashion, easily defeating Janice Exley 6-2 and 6-0. Sophomore Catherine Lydecker (Conway, NH) downed Michelle Cooley in the number five spot 6-3 and 6-0, while first year player MyDzung Chu (Springfield, MA) finished the sweep by defeating Natalee Shea 6-2 and 6-4.

The Pioneers were also able to slot two more victories in doubles action. Fujii and Whitney defeated Desroches and Exley 8-3 while Lydecker and Jacqueline Sager (Marion, MA) blanked Cooley and Shea 8-0. The Pride’s only victory came when Kelly and Weinstein defeated Johnson and Williams 8-3.

The Pioneers are back in action this Thursday, April 13th when they host Wesleyan. Match time is slotted for 3:30pm.
