         Smith Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at WPI

Worcester, MA:  Th Pioneers moved from fourth to second place in the NEWMAC softball standings with their 2-1, 5-4(9) victories at WPI yesterday. 
     In the first game, the Engineers scored in the bottom of the first inning and Smith tied it up in the top of the second.  Senior Sara Watson (Kent, WA) led off with a double down the right field line followed by shortstop Katie Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD) who doubled to left center scoring Watson.  The Pioneers scored the winning run in the fifth inning when Sarah Marari (Hawthorne, NJ) reached on a fielding error and ErinQuinn (Northbrook, IL) sacrificed advancing Matari to second.  Senior Katherine Cascio (Lawrence, MA) reached on a fielders choice and
Matari crossed the plate on a throwing error by WPI.
     Smith opened the second game scoring two runs.  Chloe Pete (Beaverton, IL) and Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY) each singled with Pete advancing to third on Frye's hit.  Junior Deb Sasges (Vancouver,British Columbia) flew out to center followed by Watson who grounded out to third with each picking up RBI's.  Smith scored again in the second to go up 3-1 but WPI tied it up in the 6th to force extra innings.  Both teams scored in the 8th inning with Smith sealing the victory in the 9th as Pete, who picked up her fourth hit of the day, doubled to left and scored Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) who had been placed on second.
     With the wins, Smith improved to 17-13 overall and 8-6 in NEWMAC while WPI dropped to 21-11 overall and 6-8 in NEWMAC competition.
