             Williams Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Smith

 Northampton, MA:  The Ephs of Williams College defeated the Pioneers this afternoon in Northampton 5-1 and 9-4 to improve to 16-8 overall while the home team fell to 10-12.  In the first game, the Ephs scored five runs in the second inning and it was all they needed to secure the victory.  Katelyn Knox (Great Falls, VA) singled followed by Katie Powers (North Reading, MA) who doubled advancing Knox to third.  Senior Laura Noel (Houston, TX) flew out to right field but picked up two RBI’s. With only one out, Becky Sansone (GlenGardner, NJ) doubled and Cathleen Clark (Plymouth, NH) reached on an error. Joey Lye (Scarborough, Ontario Canada) was thrown out on a fielder’s choice advancing both runners.  With two on, senior Alana Frost (Oakland, CA) homered to score three runs. 

            The Pioneers scored their lone run of the game in the third inning. Taryn Pestalozzi (Troutdale, OR) singled and Fantasia Hanmer (Troy, NY), pinchrunning for Pestalozzin, advanced to second on a passed ball.Outfielder Chloe Pete (Beaverton, IL) grounded out to second and Hanmer advanced to third. Junior Deb Sasges (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) singled and picked up Smith’s only RBI of the game.

            In the second game, Williams scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second and third innings and one each in the 4th and 5th innings to take the 9-4 win.  Clark, Libby Copeland –Halperin (New York, NY), Noel, Powers and Sansone each got two hits. 

            The Pioneers scored all four runs in the third inning on three hits and an error.  Pete picked up her second hit of the afternoon and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice.  Sasges reached on an error and Pete advanced to third. Sara Watson (Kent, WA) walked which loaded the bases for Smith.  Short stop Kate Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD) doubled scoring Pete and Sasges. Watson advanced to third on the double and scored the Pioneers third run on a passed ball as Schoenen took third.  Theodora Dworak (West Hartford, CT) singled which scored the Pioneers their fourth run

            Melissa Iacobucci (Phoenixville, PA) and Morgan Simpson (McLean, VA) picked up the wins for the Ephs while Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) and Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) took the losses for Smith.
