Smith Softball Splits with Wellesley in NEWMAC Doubleheader

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Smith College softball team split a twinbill with Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers won game one, 5-0, and the Blue took game two, 3-2, in eight innings.  Smith stands at 13-13 for the season and 6-6 in NEWMAC play while Wellesley moves to 16-9 on the year and 6-6 in the NEWMAC.

In game one, Pioneer pitcher, Katie Maroney (Santa Clarita, Calif.), only allowed one Wellesley hit to help give Smith the 5-0 win.  After a Wellesley error in the second inning which gave Smith a 1-0 lead, Deborah Sasges (Vancouver, BC) hit a triple in the third to score Chloe Pete (Beaverton, Ore.) and Sarah Matari (Hawthorne, N.J.), giving the Pioneers the 3-0 advantage.  Pete plated Crystal Fryer (Louisville, Ky.) and Erin Quinn (Northbrook, Ill.) in the next inning to seal the 5-0 Pioneer win.

Game two remained scoreless until the sixth inning when a double by Sasges scored Matari to give Smith a 1-0 lead. Wellesley answered back in the bottom of the inning when Meghan Sullivan (Unionville, Ontario) plated Laura Weslander (Mendota Heights, Minn), tying the game at one with a single to right field.  The game remained tied at one after seven, and the Pioneers grabbed the 2-1 advantage in the top of the eighth when Erin Quinn (Northbrook, Ill.) singled to knock in Fryer.  Again, Wellesley answered in the bottom of the inning.  Kara Wong (Milford, Mass.) picked up an RBI when she singled to score Christine Sodaro (Tiburon, Calif.) who was on third thanks to a sack fly by Weslander.  Sullivan came up big for the Blue when she grabbed her second RBI of the game on single that plated pitch-runner Melissa Irvin (Garrett Park, Md.), giving Wellesley the 3-2 win over Smith.  Along with the winning hit, Sullivan was 3-for-4 in game two.  Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario) earned her sixth win of the season striking out 14 batters and only allowing three hits.
