MA: The Pioneers lost to Springfield 4-2 this morning in the 2006
NEWMAC Softball Championship. The loss was the second for Smith
in the double elimination format thus eliminating the Pioneers who exit
the tournament with a 20-16 record.
Springfield took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with Smith answering with a run of its own in the same inning. Junior Chloe Pete (Beaverton, OR) singled, was sacrificed to second by Crystal Fryer (Louisville,KY), and scored on a single to left by Deb Sasges (Vancouver, B. C.) The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning as Kathryn Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD) singled and scored all the way from first on a double by Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY). That run wouldn't be enough for Smith as Springfield scored three runs in the top of the fifth to make it 4-2. Caitlin McGaugher (South Windsor, CT) reached on an error and advanced to second on a hit by Amanda Johansson (Leominster,MA). Senior Sarah Bagierek (Douglas, MI) then tied it up with an RBI double to left. With just one out, first year Angie Atkins (East Haddam, CT) doubled to center giving the Pride all the runs they would need for the win. Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, CT) picked up the win for Springfield while Hiltzik took the loss for Smith. |
