Smith Softball Defeats Wheaton 1-0; Advances in NEWMAC Championship
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers defeated Wheaton
College today 1-0 in quarterfinal
action of the 2006 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Softball
Championship and will face WPI on Saturday at noon
at Babson while Babson hosts Wellesley
at 10 am in the double elimination
tournament.
Smith
scored the winning run in the first inning. Outfielder Chloe Pete (Beaverton, IL) led off with a double and advanced to
third on a fielder’s choice. Junior Deb Sasges (Vancouver, British Columbia) sacrificed to deep
right field and Pete scored the only
run of the game. Smith collected six
hits with Pete picking up two.
Wheaton
had the bases loaded in the third inning with one out, but winning pitcher Kate Maroney (Santa Clarita, CA) worked her way out of the inning and
the Lyons left three stranded. Jessica DeRico (Griswold, CT)
and Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI)
each registered two hits for the Lyons
in the loss. Losing pitcher Jodi Moynagh
(Worcester, MA) gave up six hits with one walk and
two strikeouts while Maroney gave up
eight hits and struck out five.
With the
win, Smith improved to 19-14 while Wheaton
ended regular season competition 24-15.
