Smith Softball Defeats
Wheaton 1-0; Advances in NEWMAC Championship

Northampton, MA:  The Pioneers defeated Wheaton College today 1-0 in quarterfinal action of the 2006 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Softball Championship and will face WPI on Saturday at noon at Babson while Babson hosts Wellesley at 10 am in the double elimination tournament.
Smith scored the winning run in the first inning. Outfielder Chloe Pete (Beaverton, IL) led off with a double and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice.  Junior Deb Sasges (Vancouver, British Columbia) sacrificed to deep right field and Pete scored the only run of the game.  Smith collected six hits with Pete picking up two.
Wheaton had the bases loaded in the third inning with one out, but winning pitcher Kate Maroney (Santa Clarita, CA) worked her way out of the inning and the Lyons left three stranded. Jessica DeRico (Griswold, CT) and Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI) each registered two hits for the Lyons in the loss. Losing pitcher Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA) gave up six hits with one walk and two strikeouts while Maroney gave up eight hits and struck out five.
With the win, Smith improved to 19-14 while Wheaton ended regular season competition 24-15.
