Softball Ends Spring Break Trip 5-4

Fort Myers, FL: In their final two games in Fort Myers, Florida, the Pioneers finished with back to back losses to the University of Chicago and Plymouth State University.  With the two losses, Smith is currently 5-4 on the year.

Against Chicago College the Pioneers took a 4-0 loss.  The Maroons jumped on the board in the fourth inning when they pushed across four runs on two hits, 1 error, 1 walk, and 1 passed ball.  The Pioneers were unable to retaliate and fell victim to the Maroons’ Petra Wade (Batavia, IL), who was able to hold the Pioneers to just two hits.  Senior Sara Watson (Kent, WA) connected on a long double in the bottom of the second and junior Chloe Pete (Beaverton, OR) singled in the fourth.  Senior pitcher Katie Maroney (Santa Clarita, CA) took her second loss of the season, giving up 2 runs on just 2 hits and 1 walk.  Sophomore Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) replaced Maroney in the fourth but was unable to turn things around for the Pioneers.

In the final game of the afternoon, the Pioneers were again outlasted by Plymouth College with a score of 2-1.  The Panthers scored early, pushing one run across in the bottom of the second inning when a series of walks, wild pitches, and hit batters surfaced.  The Pioneers regrouped and in dramatic fashion slated one run in the top of the seventh inning.  Designated player Theo Dworak (East Hartford, CT) cranked a double to left field and advanced to third on first year Fantasia Hanmer’s (Troy, NY) sacrifice bunt.  Junior Sarah Matari (Hawthorne, NJ) stepped up to the plate with two outs and the Pioneers last chance for hope and easily singled, scoring Dworak and tying the game 1-1.  However, the Panthers scored in the bottom of the eighth inning when the game went to the international tiebreaker rule by Devin Caswell’s (Wilton, NH) long double.  First year pitcher Emily Hiltzik (Long Island, NY) took the loss on the mound, giving up 5 hits in eight innings and striking out 7.

The Pioneers are back in action this Sunday, March 26th when they host NEWMAC rival Wheaton College scheduled for 12pm.
