Softball Remains Undefeated

Fort Myers, FL: In the third day of their spring break competition, the Pioneers defeated Kalamazoo College 6-3 and blanked Bethel University 14-0. Smith is currently 5-0 on the year.

In game one against Kalamazoo, the Pioneers scored first when freshman Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY) singled and senior Sara Watson (Kent, WA) reached first on an error by the Hornets’ third baseman. Sophomore Niki Banton (Shaver Lake, CA) singled, scoring Fryer for the Pioneer’s first run. The Hornets fought back, also scoring one run when Kim Juwong (Kalamazoo, MI) doubled in her first at bat and scored on an error by junior Sarah Matari (Hawthorne, NJ).

The Pioneers continued to battle and slotted one run in the third, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth. Smith was led by Watson (3-5, 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI), Banton (3-4 with 2 RBI’s), and senior Amber Bourque-Laycsak (Tinley Park, IL) (2-4 and 1 run scored). Freshman Emily Hiltzik (Long Island, NY) picked up her second win of the season, while senior Katie Maroney (Santa Clarita, CA) picked up her first save.

Smith continued their winning streak in the second game of the afternoon, defeating the Royals 14-0 in five innings. Watson had the hot stick again for the Pioneers, going 3-4 with 6 RBI’s and 3 stolen bases. Junior Chloe Pete (Beaverton, OR) also performed well in the box, going 2-4 with 3 RBI’s. Maroney picked up her third win of the season, while sophomore Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) notched her second save.

The Pioneers will play again Tuesday, March 21 when they face Union College and Grinnell College.
