Fort Myers, Florida: In day two of their spring break trip the Pioneers picked up two more victories, defeating St. Lawrence University 10-0 and New England College 6-0. The Pioneers are now 3-0 on the year. In game one against St. Lawrence, the Pioneers jumped on the Saints early, scoring six runs in the first inning. Junior right fielder Chloe Pete (Beaverton, OR) and freshman Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY) led the inning off with back to back walks. Junior left fielder Debbie Sasges (Vancouver, BC) laid down a sacrifice bunt to set up senior Sara Watson (Kent, WA) who cracked a two RBI single. The Pioneers got three more walks from sophomore Niki Banton (Shaver Lake, CA), senior Amber Bourque-Laycsak (Tinley, IL), and sophomore Kate Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD). Freshman pitcher Emily Hiltzik (Long Island, NY) picked up 2 RBI’s with a single before the inning came to a close. The Pioneers were led by Pete (2-2 with 2 runs scored), Watson (2-3 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI’s), and Hiltzik (1-2 with 3 RBI’s). Hiltzik picked up the shutout on the mound, giving up 2 hits and striking out 6, while sophomore Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) picked up her first save of the year. In the second game of the afternoon the Pioneers blanked New England College 6-0. The Pioneers attacked first again, scoring one run in the top of the first inning by a single from Schoenen, followed with a walk by Watson and an RBI single from Banton. The Pioneers struck again in the second when junior right fielder Sarah Matari (Hawthorne, NJ) led the inning off with a single and stole second. Matari advanced to third and scored, both on passed balls. Senior pitcher Katie Maroney (Santa Clarita, CA) picked up the win on the mound, giving up 2 hits and striking out 8. The Pioneers play again Monday, March 20 against Kalamazoo College and Bethel University. |
