Smith Lacrosse Defeated by Wheaton in Conference Opener

Northampton, MA:  Smith Lacrosse opened New England Women’s & Men’s Conference play this afternoon against the Lyons of Wheaton College, succumbing to Wheaton 15-3.  Smith played without their leading attacker, sophomore Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY), out with an injury. The Pioneers were able to muster goals from their other top offensive threats, but the Lyons proved untamable on offense this afternoon, winning convincingly 15-3.

First year Liz Mehr (Charlotte,  ME) was the lone scorer for the Pioneers in the first half, scoring off an assist by Brea Stump (Bath, ME) at 3:47 into the game.  Susie Parke Sutherland (Columbia, MO) was able to find the net on an unassisted goal in the second half at 13:22 and a minute later, Ann Lee Harris (Saxtons River, VT) added another unassisted score for Smith.  Julia Coit scored five goals and added an assist to lead the Lyons.

Smith netminder Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) saved 15 shots and allowed 15 goals.  As a team, the Pioneers claimed 24 ground balls and caused 23 turnovers.

Smith (1-4 overall, 0-1 NEWMAC) returns to action this Tuesday when they travel to Wesleyan for a non-conference game at 4 pm.
