Smith Lacrosse Still Seeking First NEWMAC Win
Following 19-10 Loss to Wellesley

Northampton, MA:  The Blue of Wellesley College picked up their first NEWMAC win on the road today over the Pioneers of Smith, 19-10.  With the loss, Smith remains winless in conference play (0-5) and drops to 3-10 overall while the Blue stand at 1-3 in the conference, improving to 6-8 overall.

Despite three big saves by Smith netminder Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) in the opening minutes of play, Wellesley managed to score seven unanswered goals to build a comfortable lead with twelve minutes remaining in the first half.  The Pioneers’ offense was finally ignited by Anna Lee Harris (Saxtons River, VT) at 11:31 as she cut through the middle to accept a pass from Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY), scooping it up and under Wellesley goalie Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY) for Smith’s first tally of the game.  Wellesley answered back less than 3 minutes later on a goal by Katie Mosley (Denver, CO) to put the Blue up by 7, 8-1.  Harris and Smyth connected again at 5:29 when Smyth made a pass from the right goal post to Harris, cutting down the middle, for the Pioneer’s second goal and the first of the next four straight scores for Smith.  At 3:35 Susie Parke-Sutherland (Columbia, MO) was the recipient of a cross pass from Smyth, finding the bottom corner of the net to cut the Blue’s lead to 8-3.  Sara Barksdale (Baltimore, MD) found Hillary Hightower (Stone Mtn., GA) for the next Pioneer goal to inch closer Wellesley’s 8-4 lead.   Smyth ended the period for Smith with 30 seconds remaining as she spun a Wellesley defender around to hit the twine behind Jaronczyk for Smith’s fifth goal with Wellesley still ahead by three, 8-5 heading into the second half of play.

Smyth continued her offensive presence in the second half, opening the scoring for the Pioneers as she circled the net finding the short corner at 28:17 to bring her team within 2 of a tie, 8-6.  Wellesley managed to regain their momentum as they controlled the next seven minutes of play, scoring four unanswered goals while burning crucial time off the clock for Smith.  Amber Evans (Worthington, OH) picked up a goal at 27:40 from Abby Baird (Gloucester, MA), Katie Moseley scored unassisted at 26:02 and then again at 25:01 from Baird and Audrey Gill (Exeter, NH) found the net at 23:56 to push the Blue’s lead to 12-6.  Barksdale retaliated at 19:48 scoring off a pass from Lesley Aldrich (Vero Beach, FL) to bring her team within 5 of the Blue’s 12-7 advantage.

Mosely continued to lead the offense for Wellesley, scoring on a free position goal at the 16 minute mark push the Blue ahead again by 7, 14-7 before she scored again 56 seconds later unassisted.  Wellesley went to score two more goals, at 14:26 and 12:37 on goals by Evans and Baird before Susie Parke-Sutherland score a free position goal for Smith at 11:26.  With the Blue leading 17-8, Catherine Schaefer (Coxsackie, NY) and Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, NJ) gave the Blue the 19-8 lead before Parke-Sutherland gave Smith their 9th goal of the game at 10:06.  Anna Lee Harris then took a Blue defender from the ride offensive zone to the front of the net, reaching around for Smith’s final score of the game at 5:17.   Evans picked up the final Wellesley score with a minute and change remaining in the game to seal the Blue’s 19-10 win over the Pioneers.

Sara Smith saved 20 Wellesley shots and let in 19 this afternoon while Jaronczyk saved 12 Smith shots and allowed 10 goals.  Wellesley picked up 32 ground balls to Smith’s 13 and also had the caused turnover advantage with 7 CT’s to Smith’s 6 and the edge on draw controls with 18 to Smith’s 8.

Smith will look for their first conference win at home on Tuesday when the square off against area rival Mount Holyoke at 4:30 pm.
