Lacrosse Falls in Quarterfinals of NEWMAC Championship

Norton, MA: The Pioneers concluded their 2006 season yesterday at Wheaton College as Smith fell 17-4 to the Lyons in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC Lacrosse Championship.
     The teams traded goals for the first five tallies with Wheaton taking the lead 3-2 with 18:57 left in the first half. Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY) made it 5-3 as she scored her second goal of the day for the Pioneers at the 13:56 mark, but the Lyons defense then held the Pioneers scoreless until 35 seconds remained in regulation.
     Merdith Hurd scored a game high four goals for Wheaton in the win while Anna Lee Harris (SaxtonsRiver, VT) and Blair Rapalyea (Prides Crossing, MA) each added a goal each for the Pioneers. With the win, Wheaton improved to 8-6 overall and advanced to the semifinals of the championship.   The Pioneers end the 2006 season 3-13 overall.
