New England College, 11-7 Northampton, MA: The Pioneers of Smith got off to a slow start this afternoon against the Pilgrims of New England College, yet managed to contain the Pilgrim offense for much of the second half, finally succumbing on a late game goal scoring surge by the Pilgrims to drop the non-conference contest 11-7. The Pilgrims opened up the scoring just 50 seconds into the game when Emily Tanguay (Manchester, NH) found the net behind Pioneer goalie Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) for the early lead. The Pilgrims used their speed in the transition to put three more tallies on the board in the first half on a goal by Marissa Porri (Lynbrook, NY) at 27:11, and two by Jen Carboni (Canton, CT) at 22:53 and 12:14. Smith attacker Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY) waited for the right moment to make a pass to Susie Parke-Sutherland (Columbia, MO) who was too quick for Pilgrim netminder Laura Bishop (Brunswick, ME), putting the Pioneers on the board at 7:07 to cut the Pilgrims’ lead 4-1 heading into the second half of play. The Pilgrims opened up the second half scoring much in the same fashion as the first period, getting the early score at 29:33 on Carboni’s third tally of the game to push their lead to 5-1. Smith went on a scoring spree in the next 7 minutes, scoring four unanswered goals. Smith midfielder Sarah Barksdale (Baltimore, MD) took a pass from Smyth at 28:35, beating Bishop to bring Smith within 3 of the lead, before Smyth found the net again at 27:37 for an unassisted tally, closing in on New England’s 5-3 advantage. With the Pilgrims lead cut to 2, Anna Lee Harris (Saxtons River, VT) scored again for Smith at 26:17 with the assist credited to Lesley Aldrich (Vero Beach, FL). Parke-Sutherland was the benefactor off a pass from Elizabeth Nickle (Wilmington, DE) at 25:11 to knot the game at 5. Marissa Porri picked up the go-ahead goal for the Pilgrims at 21:52 before Smith answered back 13 seconds later when Barksdale won the draw and passed to Smyth who shook off the Pilgrim defenders, taking the ball to goal for the score. The game was stalemated at 6 until 14:45 when New England’s Tanguay found the net once for what turned out to be the game winning goal and again at 12:09 to put her team up by two, 7-5. Parke-Sutherland, who opened the scoring for Smith, ended it for the Pioneers at 8:51 with the team's final goal of the game, to settle for 7 goals in the affair. New England’s late scoring surge in the last 6 minutes to play sealed the win for the Pilgrims who improve to 7-5 overall. Smith falls to 3-9 overall and will move on to host NEWMAC opponent Wellesley College on Saturday at 4:30 pm. Smyth led Smith in the losing effort with 2 goals and 3 helpers along side three goals from Susie Park-Sutherland. 1 2 F Smith College (3-9 Overall) 1 6 7 New England College (7-5) 4 7 11 Scoring: 1st Half: NEC 29:10 Emily Tanguay (Marissa Porri) NEC 27:11 Porri (unassisted) NEC 22:53 Jen Carboni (unassisted) NEC 12:14 Carboni (unassisted) SC 7:07 Susie Parke-Sutherland (Sara Smyth) 2nd Half: NEC 29:33 Tanguay (unassisted) SC 28:35 Sarah Barksdale (Smyth) SC 27:37 Smyth (unassisted) SC 26:17 Anna Lee Harris (Lesley Aldrich) SC 25:24 Parke-Sutherland (Elizabeth Nickle) NEC 21:52 Porri SC 21:39 Smyth (Barksdale) NEC 14:45 Tanguay NEC 12:09 Porri SC 8:51 Parke-Sutherland NEC 5:37 Tanguay NEC 2:06 Carboni NEC 1:57 Tanguay (Porri) Goalies Saves / Goals Against / Minutes SC- Sara Smith 22 11 60:00 NEC- Laura Bishop 10 7 60:00 |
