 MIT Lacrosse Defeats Smith 9-4

Northampton, MA:  The Engineers of MIT registered their first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory today as they defeated Smith 9-4.With the win, MIT improves to 3-4 overall while Smith falls to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

             The Engineers took a 4-2 lead into the half on goals scored by Mary Hatch (McMurray, PA), Randee Miller (Birmingham, MI), Deanna Lentz (Gaithersburg, MD) and Mary Harding (Wilton, CT).  The Pioneers two goals were tallied by Susan Parke-Sutherland (Columbia, MO) and Hillary Hightower (Stone Mt., GA) with Hightower picking up the assist on Parke-Sutherland’s goal. Second half scoring began at the 26:23 mark when Miller scored what would be the winning goal.  Sarah Barksdale (Baltimore, MD) and Betsy Nickle (Wilmington, DE) each scored in the second half for the Pioneers. Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) played all 60 minutes for Smith in goal making 16 saves while allowing the nine goals.

              The Pioneers will be in action again on Tuesday when they host Elms College at 4:30 pm.
