Portland, ME: The Pioneers continue to improve as they racked up a team total of 81 points to take the third place finish at today’s invitational held at the University of Southern Maine. USM won their invitational (216 points), followed by Bates (164 points), Smith, Emmanuel College (58 points), UMass Dartmouth (48 points), and Rhode Island College (40 points). Senior Katie Walters-Krohn (Minneapolis, MN) led all Pioneer scorers, totaling 15 individual points. Walters-Krohn, who previously held the school record for the weight throw (45-08 ft), broke it today by throwing for a distance of 46-02 feet. She also placed second in the shot put (38 ft). Also leading the way for Smith was first year Claire Edwards (Clamath Falls, OR) as she placed third in the 55 meter dash (7.79) and fourth in the 200 meter run (28.92). Senior Liz Kelly (Storrs, CT) won the 3000 meter run (10:59.44) and first year Sari Field (Nutley, NJ) came in fourth (11:57.87). Also scoring points for the Pioneers were McKane Sharff (Arlington, MA) in the 55 meter dash (7.82) and 200 meter run (29.04), Alison Cloutier (East Hampton, CT) in the 1 mile run (5:41.02), Meagan Whetstone (Des Moines, IA) in the 1 mile run (5:53.98), Rebecca Staples-Moore (Concord, MA) in the 1 mile run (5:58.48), Caitlin Ritchie (Meriden, CT) in the 400 meter dash (1:09.06), and Sue Jensen (Saxons River, VT) in the pole vault (2.74m). Smith’s ‘A’ squad, comprised of Cloutier, Whetstone, Kelly, and Chesney McOmber (Oakdale, CT) also placed second in the 4X800 meter relay. The Pioneers are back in action Saturday, February 4th as they host the Smith Tartan Classic beginning at 10am. |
