Smith Indoor Track Team Finishes Fourth at Brandeis Invitational

Waltham, MA:  A total team effort resulted in eight Smith track & field athletes contributing to scoring 53 points gaining the Pioneers a fourth place finish among eight Division III institutions.  Brandeis won their invitational with 187 points followed by Bowdoin (147 pts), WPI (61 pts) and then Smith College.

Smith was led by second place finishers in the pole vault, Sue Jensen 9’6.25”, and Katie Walters-Krohn in the shot put (37’8.5”) and the 20 lb weight throw (43’2.25”).  Claire Edwards added two third place finishes, one in the 55m (7.82) and one in the long jump (14’9.25”) to score 12 points for the tracksters.  Karmini Sampath finished 6th in the 800m (2:54.69) run and was joined by distance runners, Alison Cloutier (Mile 5:46 and 1,000m 3:30), Sari Field (Mile 5:54), Becca Staples-Moore (3,000m 11:40) and Meaghan Whetstone (3,000m 12:18) as Smith’s point scorers.

Smith travels to the University of Southern Maine Saturday, January 28 before hosting the Tartan Invitational on Saturday, February 4.
