Equestrian Captures Third at Season Opening UMass Show

Amherst, MA:  The Smith Equestrian team braved frigid temperatures yesterday at their season-opening show at UMass to finish third behind the host school in second and high point college winner Mount Holyoke. Ten schools competed in the show.  Individually, Smith had an excellent day with two riders earning first place, three with second place finishes and six taking home third.

Jill Medinger (Newton, CT) won her jumping class and is now qualified for regionals on the flat and over fences.  Mikaela LeBlanc (Cotuit, MA) was the other first place rider for Smith. Earning second place for the Pioneers were Rosemary Bethea (Trenton, NJ), Barrett Phillips (Goochland, VA), Catherine Yohay, Chia Li (Bayside, NY), Emily Hertz (Brattleboro, VT), and Kim Meskimen (Medina, MN)

Smith alumnae Jessica Willis (Ridgefield, CT) and Christie McKenzie (Trumansburg, NY) took home two first place finishes in the Zone 1 Region 3 Alumnae events.

Smith holds onto their third place standing in Zone 1 Region 3 with 186 points while Mount Holyoke has a stronghold on first place with 250 points, followed by UMass in second with 217 points.  Smith will look to gain some ground on second in the standings when they travel to Mount Holyoke on March 4th.
