MA: The Pioneers swept all four races en route to their third
consecutive NEWMAC Crew Championship today at Lake Quinsigamond in
Worcester. Smith not only won the NEWMAC title (awarded to the
winner of the varsity eight race) but also was the Florence Jope Smith
Cup Champion, given to the overall points winner. The Pioneers
racked up 48 points, followed by Mount Holyoke with 36, Coast Guard
with 28, Wellesley -24, Clark - 8 and WPI with 6.

The first race of the day was the Novice 8 in which Smith placed first among four boats with a time of 7:15.79 followed by Mount Holyoke (7:18.95), Wellesley (7:21.69) and Clark (8:30.79). The Pioneers won the third varsity 8 race (7:25.10) seven seconds in front of Coast Guard (7:32.30). Mount Holyoke finished third followed by Wellesley. Both the second varsity 8 and varsity 8 won with open water between them and their opponents. The second varsity 8 crossed the finish line in 7:09.80 with the closest challenger Coast Guard at 7:20.22. Mount Holyoke took third in 7:20.80 with Wellesley fourth (7;53.80). The final race of the day was the varsity 8 where Smith took the NEWMAC title in a time of 7:01.40. Mount Holyoke was second (7:09.99), Coast Guard third (7:14.40), WPI fourth (7:20.60); Wellesley fifth (7:31.27) and Clark sixth (8:12.40). Seniors Annie Coppock (Rutland, VT) and Kristina Latta-Landefeld (Toledo, OH) were named to the 2006 NEWMAC Varsity Rowing All Conference team with first year Lela Schlenker (Norwich, VT) named to the novice all conference team.
