Worcester, MA: On the very same waters that will host next weekend’s highly anticipated New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference Rowing Championships, two-time defending NEWMAC Champions Smith College, got a glimps of a strong Mount Holyoke team that finished just eight points shy of the Florence Smith Cup points title in 2005, behind Smith who claimed their 5th since 1998. At yesterday’s regatta at host Holy Cross, the Pioneers saw Mount Holyoke finish in 5.21 seconds in front of them, during the women’s Varsity Eight race. Trinity won the event in 7.05.4 followed by Mount Holyoke in second at 7.17.09, UNH in third at 7.20.08, Holy Cross in fourth at 7:20.27, with Smith closing out the race in 5th at 7:22.30. Smith’s highest finished yesterday was in the 2nd Varsity Eight event where they were runner-ups to Holy Cross. Mount Holyoke placed 4th followed by Trinity in 5th. Both the Novice Eight and 2nd Novice Eight placed 3rd each time behind 1st place Trinity and 2nd place Holy Cross. Smith will have the week to prepare for Saturday’s NEWMAC Championships hosted by Clark University at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA.
