Smith Defeats Wheaton 59-39 to Claim First NEWMAC Victory

 Northampton, MA:  The Pioneers picked up their first NEWMAC win of the season today as they defeated Wheaton College 59-39.  With the victory, Smith improved to 6-13 overall and 1-8 in conference play while Wheaton fell to 12-9 overall and 4-5 in the NEWMAC.

            After the lead exchanged seven times in the first half, the Pioneers took a one-point advantage into the half (23-22). With the score tied at 36 with 10:32 remaining in the game, Ashley Sutton (Greenfield, MA) converted a 3-pointer for Smith that started a 23-3 run that gave the Pioneers the victory. Helena Charron (Pittsfield, NH) scored a game high 15 points for Smith while Sutton added a dozen.  Becky Aitchison (Norwalk, CT) led the Lyons with a dozen and teammate Casey Sorbara (Port Chester, NY) added eleven.

            Smith is in action again on Tuesday, February 7 when they travel to Clark University for a 7 p.m. contest.
