Smith Basketball Downed by Conference Leader
Springfield 36-71

Springfield, Ma:  New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference leader Springfield College poised a solid defensive effort to hold off the Pioneers of Smith 71-36 in women’s basketball action Tuesday evening.  With Smith’s leading offensive threat junior Nati Lenchner (Aszor, Isreal) (9.6 ppg) sidelined with an ankle injury, the Pioneers struggled on offense, shooting just 28.3 % from the floor and 23.1 % from behind the arc.  The Pioneer’s, on target at the free throw line, out-shooting the Pride 70% to 58.3%, trailed by 16 at the half but were thwarted by the Pride’s three doubled digit scorers in senior forward Courtney Parvin (15 points, 7 rebounds), and sophomore guards Tara McCarthy (14 points) and Christine Cotter (13 points).

With the loss, Smith falls to last place (0-6) in the conference and 5-11 overall.   The Pride of Springfield, winning their 7th consecutive game, remain on the top of the conference with a 7-0 record  (13-5 overall).

Smith was led by first year guard Rose Baldwin (S. Strafford, VT) who netted a season high 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.  Senior forward Shelley Harrison (Reston, VA) pulled down 7 caroms for the Pioneers and added to her conference leading block total with 5 against the Pride bringing her to 58 for the season.  Sophomore guard Ashley Sutton (Greenfield, MA) dished out 4 assists.

Smith will return to action on Saturday, January 28th when they travel to Wellesley College to take on the 6th place (NEWMAC) Blue at 2 pm.
